Liverpool Seafarers Centre CEO Champions Diversity at Women in Maritime Event
LIVERPOOL, UK — On May 13th, the Liverpool Seafarers Centre was proud to take part in the Women in Maritime Afternoon Tea, an inspiring event hosted by Mersey Maritime and sponsored by Atlantic Container Line.
The afternoon brought together leaders from across the industry to celebrate the achievements of women at sea and discuss the path toward a more inclusive maritime future.
A Call for Greater Representation
Our Chief Executive, John Wilson, was in attendance, and used the platform to advocate for an increase in female representation within the sector. During the discussions, John emphasised that the industry's evolution depends on welcoming more women into roles on board Merchant Vessels.
"It is no longer enough to simply talk about diversity; we must actively champion it," John stated. "Having women in maritime is essential for the industry's growth, and we need to see more female faces on the decks and in the engine rooms of our global fleet."
Practical Support Where It Matters Most
While the event celebrated progress, it also served as a reminder of the unique challenges women face at sea. John highlighted how Liverpool Seafarers Centre provides tangible support for female seafarers during our daily ship visits.
To ensure female crew members feel supported and valued, we provide bespoke toiletry bags designed specifically for their needs. These kits include:
Essential sanitary products
Skincare products such as moisturisers and shampoo
General healthcare items including toothpaste etc
Sanitary products are often difficult to source on board or can be hard to access in foreign ports when shore leave is restricted. By providing these essentials, Liverpool Seafarers Centre aims to bridge the gap in welfare provision and ensure every seafarer has access to basic necessities.
Our Ongoing Commitment
The Liverpool Seafarers Centre remains dedicated to being a "home away from home" for all who come to Merseyside. We extend our thanks to Mersey Maritime and ACL for organising such a vital event and for allowing us to share our mission of support and equality.
Together, we can steer the maritime industry toward a more diverse and equitable horizon.
