The Liverpool Seafarers Centre are delighted to announce a new commitment to a positive and fulfilling working environment by officially signing the Work Happiness Charter. This move underscores our charity’s belief that a happy, respected, and engaged team is essential to delivering the highest quality welfare and support to the thousands of seafarers who pass through the Port of Liverpool each year.

The Work Happiness Charter, driven by WorkL, is a global movement dedicated to transforming workplaces into respectful, fulfilling, and happy spaces where people thrive. By signing the charter, Liverpool Seafarers Centre are committing to uphold fundamental 'Happiness Rights' for everyone involved with the charity—from paid staff to our indispensable volunteer workforce. These rights include being treated with respect, being recognised for good performance, feeling safe, and being provided with the opportunity to show one's ability.

For a charity whose entire mission is based on care and welfare, this charter perfectly aligns with our core values. It recognises that the happiness and commitment brought by staff and volunteers directly impacts the vital services provided to the seafarers who spend months away from home.

Commenting on the announcement, John Wilson BEM, Chief Executive of the Liverpool Seafarers Centre, said:

“For us at Liverpool Seafarers Centre, the welfare of seafarers is our absolute priority, and we know that we can only deliver the highest level of support if our own team—our staff and incredible volunteers—feel valued, respected, and happy. Signing the Work Happiness Charter is a public commitment that we believe in creating a truly fulfilling and positive environment for everyone who dedicates their time to this vital mission. We are proud to stand alongside other organisations that recognise it is everyone’s right to be happy at work, and that includes volunteer work.”
