Winter Shore Leave: How to Make the Most of Your Time in Liverpool

A Seafarers Guide to Visiting Liverpool in Winter

Stepping off a vessel and onto dry land is always a relief, but arriving in Liverpool during the winter months has its own unique charm. While the Mersey breeze might be a bit colder this time of year, the welcome in our city is warmer than ever.

If you are lucky enough to have shore leave this winter, here is a guide on how to spend your time—from relaxing at our centre to exploring the best of the city.

1. Start Your Leave at the Liverpool Seafarers Centre

Before heading into the hustle and bustle of the city, come and warm up with us. Our centre at 20 Crosby Road South is designed to be your "home away from home." Whether you have a few hours or a full day, we provide a quiet, safe space to decompress.

Our Facilities Include:

  • Free Wi-Fi: Connect with your family and friends back home without worrying about data costs.

  • Licenced Bar: Enjoy a cold beer or a warm coffee in a relaxed environment.

  • Entertainment: We have a pool table, table football, and a large-screen TV for movies or sports.

  • Communications Hub: Access to computers, laptops, and international SIM cards/top-ups.

  • Relaxation: A well-stocked library, international newspapers, and a DVD exchange.

  • Quiet Space: Our chapel and prayer room are open daily for reflection, regardless of faith.

  • Practical Services: Currency exchange and a small shop for essentials and toiletries.

2. Use Our Minibus for a Stress-Free Shopping Trip

We know that one of the top priorities for crew members is often stocking up on supplies or buying gifts for loved ones. Navigating public transport in a new city in the winter rain isn’t always easy.

We offer a free minibus service to transport you from the docks to our centre, and crucially, we can help get you to the best shopping spots in the city.

  • Liverpool ONE: A massive open-air (but mostly sheltered) shopping district with over 170 stores.

  • Local Supermarkets: If you need to stock up on snacks or personal items, we can help you get to the larger supermarkets nearby.

  • Call or Message us in advance to arrange your pickup.

  • Please be patient – this is not an immediate taxi service and delays can happen.

  • Agreed times must be kept. If your return time changes, please call us immediately.

  • Limit - 8 passengers. For smaller groups, we may suggest a public bus or train as an alternative.

3. Explore Liverpool’s Winter Highlights

If you have a bit more time to explore, Liverpool has some world-class indoor attractions where you can stay dry and warm:

  • The World Museum & Walker Art Gallery: Both are free to enter and located right in the city centre. They are perfect for a quiet afternoon of culture.

  • The Royal Albert Dock: Even in winter, the waterfront is beautiful. Visit The Beatles Story or the Maritime Museum to learn about the history of the very docks you are working in.

  • St George’s Plateau: If you are here during the festive season, the Christmas markets offer great street food and a lively atmosphere.

  • Warm Up with a "Scouse": Head to a local pub and try a bowl of Scouse—Liverpool’s famous hearty meat and vegetable stew. It is the perfect winter meal for a hungry seafarer.
