Creating Space for Seafarers’ Stories: Our ICMA Training Session
Liverpool Seafarers Centre train with ICMA
On 19th September 2025, our staff at the Liverpool Seafarers’ Centre was trained by Dr. Jason Zuidema of the International Christian Maritime Association (ICMA). The half-day session focused on ship visiting, reminding our team that this work is rooted in our mission to be a "home away from home" for seafarers. Ship visiting is about being present, serving with love, and showing seafarers that they are not forgotten.
The training emphasised the importance of entering each encounter with open hands, ready to create space for meaningful conversation. Dr. Zuidema encouraged us to break down physical and emotional barriers, seeing every moment as an opportunity for connection. The core message was clear: people are the heart of our work.
Our Director, John Wilson, reflected on the training, stating that it was a crucial step to "upskill" the team after a recent online course. He recognised that while we had a good foundation, we were missing opportunities to fully engage with seafarers. John noted that the training, from a long-time member like ICMA, was invaluable. "We believe that the team will be better equipped as individuals to understand what we stand for and why we do what we do," he said.
The session reinforced our purpose, reminding us that the Liverpool Seafarers’ Centre is a "beacon of hope, help, love and support." It was a powerful reminder that each team member brings unique gifts to one shared mission. The training encouraged us to seize opportunities and embrace challenges, because for us, ship visiting is never just a task—it is an act of presence, love, and hope.
