Liverpool Seafarers Centre has developed an exciting new initiative to enhance the oral health of seafarers. Through a carefully crafted pilot program, some visiting seafarers are now issued with a comprehensive dental pack that includes a toothbrush, toothpaste, 2 minute timer, dental floss, and an informative leaflet highlighting the importance of oral hygiene.
But that’s not all. They recognise the challenges that seafarers face when it comes to accessing dental care, which is why they plan to introduce mobile dental surgery. At select times, seafarers can receive full dental treatment and expert advice, going beyond the emergency extractions that are often the only option available.
The initiative has the support and endorsement of the Mersey Port Health Authority, an organisation dedicated to improving the health and well-being of all seafarers. And, to ensure that they’re meeting the needs of seafarers, they’re currently limiting participation to vessels scheduled to return to Liverpool. This allows them to evaluate the effectiveness of the program before expanding it to all seafarers visiting Liverpool and the numerous berths within the Mersey.
The feedback from onboard crews has been overwhelmingly positive, and they’re committed to continuing to assess the impact of the pilot scheme. So, if your vessel is visiting Liverpool, don’t miss out on this unique opportunity to improve your oral health and well-being!
